I’ve got APPathy! Do You?!
Are you tired of downloading awful apps to your phone? I’ll admit – I am very stingy with my hard drive space. I don’t keep any files on my laptop at all. In fact, I back up everything. From my laptop to my smart phone, I like to keep things very light. My coworkers used to make fun of me because it looked like I didn’t work in the office. My desk was always completely cleaned off. I guess its just something about that clean, organized feeling that I love. So when I started to get really annoyed by downloading apps for events, I thought it was just me. But, as I talked to more and more people, I realized that I’m not the only one.
Creating a single use app for your event used to be a really cool concept and I can still see some room for it to be successful. But, I think it’s been totally overused.
Part of the challenge was the fact that it was hard to get people to adopt the app. Many times, I would download an app for an event, logon, and just see the same 10 people who I always see on every event app. The early adopters were there, but the real people that I wanted to network with (the people I didn’t know) weren’t. So, downloading the app became less interesting.
Then there was the fact that I had to create a separate profile for each one. It gets annoying to keep uploading your headshot, adding your bio, and writing information about yourself. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I like to talk about myself. But, I don’t want to say the same things over and over.
And then there was the fact that I had nothing to do with the app after the day was over. Time to delete, and I would see all of my work just go down the drain.
Now, I’m totally obsessed with multiuse apps. For anything that I will access more than a few times, it’s completely worth it. With multi-use apps, I am more focused on things like social interaction, less draw from my memory during down times and easy access. These are all things that I don’t even have time to think about with a single use app because by the time I would start considering these things, the app is already useless.
Let me know what you think. Do you still download apps? If so, how do you know which ones are good to download? I rely on a few close friends to try out hundreds and tell me about just about the ones they know I will like.
When an event has an app, do you download it? What are the qualifications that you look for in deciding whether it’s worth it?
