We Pinned It: Cakes
Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
If it seems like cake has been around forever, that’s because it practically has. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to show evidence of baking. Even though their cakes were more like what we consider bread and were probably sweetened with honey, rather than sugar, cake was certainly a nice change of pace from all of the gamey meat they were used to!
Let them eat cake!
Modern cakes, especially layer cakes, are usually made up of a combination of flour, sugar, eggs, and butter or oil. Depending on your taste and the occasion, the insides of the cake can vary greatly. There are so many flavors to choose from! Chocolate, carrot, black forest just to name a few. Cakes were, and still are, a way to show someone you care. In a time when nuts and dried fruits were considered a luxury, a cake that contained those ingredients symbolized the value of the recipient. Nowadays, those items aren’t as expensive but our more ornate cakes are still often filled with fruit preserves or pastry cream as well as more decadent ingredients such as champagne, figs and even diamonds!
It’s a piece of cake!
